Nature of the Programme:

The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary, Schools-based) leads to teacher registration in Aotearoa New Zealand and aims to develop knowledgeable and skilful teachers who have the expertise to be effective and to continue to develop their practice. It is underpinned by the belief that in order to be able to teach effectively, trainees need to know both what to do and how to do it, but also why they are undertaking particular approaches and practices.

It will build trainees who are adaptive experts, able to understand and unpack their teaching practice, make adjustments, and effectively support the learning and development of their students by:

  • enabling a seamless transition between research and practice, through the programme design and the underpinning conceptual frameworks
  • providing trainees with extensive classroom experience, which sees them embedded in all aspects of school life
  • ensuring trainees are supported by effective mentors (who have undergone training and receive ongoing support) as well as subject leads and other experts
  • supporting trainees to engage with a broad research base and to use this research to understand the impact of their teaching practice
  • progressing trainees’ expertise over the year and scaffolding the development of core teaching practices
  • assessing trainees through real teaching tasks
  • combining core knowledge with flexibility of approach, to enable trainees to progress at their own rate, and be responsive to the context in which they are teaching
  • ensuring trainees understand what it means to be an effective teacher in Aotearoa New Zealand, including their commitment to upholding and enacting the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to building their knowledge of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori

Trainees will be based in a home-school for their training year and and will be assigned a mentor teacher/s with whom they will work over the course of the year and gradually assume greater teaching responsibility. Trainees will spend 4 days per week in schools and 1 day per week in workshops, either with the whole cohort or with their subject group. They will also attend three week long block courses during the year and will engage in 2 away practica.
