Enrolment Requirements

To be eligible for our Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary, schools-based) you must:
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree at level 7 on the New Zealand Qualification Framework (NZQF), or a recognised equivalent
  • Demonstrate competence in one of the official languages of the national curriculum – English or Te Reo Māori
  • Have a body of knowledge from NZQF Level 5 to 7 or higher in your entry qualification, that is relevant for teaching in a particular secondary school subject. We will assess this based on the formal academic qualifications you hold, and you may be required to provide further evidence of your subject knowledge if this cannot be fully verified on the basis of these qualifications. Please note: for the 2025 academic year, we are only accepting applications for students applying to teach English, Maths, Te Reo Māori, Technology, Social Sciences (with a specialism in History or Geography) or Science (with a specialism in Physics, Biology or Chemistry).
You will also need to:
  • Provide all the required documentation, including evidence of your identity, a copy of your Bachelor’s degree certificate and academic transcript (which needs to be certified by a JP or barrister if it is an overseas qualification) and a CV outlining your work history for the last five years
  • Complete an interview and gain the support of a school that is a part of The Teachers’ Institute community to complete the programme while based at that school
  • Provide us with the contact details of two referees (excluding family members)
  • Complete an assessment of your current level of Te Reo Māori and make a commitment to developing your Te Reo Māori throughout the programme
  • Pass a safety check, including (but not limited to) a New Zealand Police vet
  • In some cases, candidates may need to complete additional steps in order to provide evidence of their suitability for the programme, including a literacy and numeracy test.
