Eligibility Requirements
Meeting the listed minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Each application is reviewed individually and candidates may be referred to our selection panel for consideration of a placement.
Educational Qualifications
-
Hold a Bachelor’s degree at level 7 on the New Zealand Qualification and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) or a recognised equivalent. If you hold an international qualification, you will need to check that it appears on the Immigration New Zealand list of qualifications exempt from assessment. If it doesn’t appear on this list then you will need to apply for an IQA.
-
Demonstrate competence in one of the official languages of the national curriculum – English or Te Reo Māori – and provide evidence of this. Please check the Teaching Council Language Competency requirements for full details.
-
For the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary, School-based), you must have relevant subject knowledge from NZQCF Level 5 to 7 or higher in your entry qualification that aligns with a particular secondary school subject. Your formal academic qualifications will be assessed, and you may need to provide further evidence of your subject knowledge if it cannot be fully verified. Note: For the 2026 academic year, we are only accepting applications for students applying to teach English, Maths, Te Reo Māori, Technology, Social Sciences (specialising in History or Geography), Science (specialising in Physics, Biology, or Chemistry), Music, Visual Arts, Drama, Accounting, Economics, Business, P.E, Health and Languages.
Additional Requirements
-
Provide all required documentation, including evidence of your identity, a copy of your Bachelor’s degree certificate and academic transcript (certified by a JP or barrister if it is an overseas qualification – some international qualifications may also need an IQA), and a CV outlining your work history for the last five years.
-
Complete an interview and gain the support of a TTI partner school to complete the programme while based at that school.
-
Provide contact details of two referees (excluding family members).
-
Complete an assessment of your current level of Te Reo Māori and commit to developing your Te Reo Māori throughout the programme.
-
Sit and pass a literacy and numeracy assessment.
-
Pass a safety check, including (but not limited to) a New Zealand Police vet. You will also need police clearance from each relevant country if you have lived overseas for 12 months or more within the last 10 years.
In some cases, candidates may need to complete additional steps to provide evidence of their suitability for the programme.
