Celebrating Our Inaugural Cohort
Celebrating Our Inaugural Cohort
January 13, 2025
The Teachers’ Institute (TTI) is excited to announce the commencement of our first cohort of teacher trainees this week. These trainees have all received a fully funded place on our programme which includes a $12,500 stipend to assist with living and study-related expenses.
Our newly launched Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary, School-based) represents a significant milestone in addressing the critical teacher supply issues in New Zealand, especially in subject areas such as Science, Technology, Social Science, Maths, English, and Te Reo Māori.
We are delighted to welcome 48 dedicated teacher trainees as part of our inaugural 2025 cohort. These trainees will be based at 14 schools around Auckland. Notably, over 50% of our cohort comprises career changers from diverse industry backgrounds, including law, education, marketing, finance, engineering, and IT. Additionally, over half of the cohort have completed postgraduate-level study, with more than 30% holding a master’s or PhD degree.
David Ferguson, The Teachers’ Institute’s CEO said: “We are very proud of this cohort of diverse and talented student-teachers who are joining us in our mission to train the best teachers possible for our schools. We are looking forward to getting to know them and working with them, as they prepare to become qualified and inspirational teachers”
Our one-year, full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary, School-based) will lead to New Zealand teacher registration. With the support of a community of schools across Auckland, The Teachers’ Institute aims to create an in-school pathway for new graduates and mature students to train as teachers while being based in a home school. Additionally, our trainees attend weekly workshops at TTI’s Newmarket campus, receiving both practical and theoretical support. This programme is built on international research to develop teaching practices within a real-world environment, seamlessly blending theoretical knowledge with practical application.
